Male sterilization

Sterilization (vasectomy) is a simple, safe, and effective treatment for permanent contraception, and is the safest method of contraception known. If you are absolutely certain that you do not want any more children in the future, sterilization may be an option.

The procedure is performed by a urologist or general surgeon and has a short recovery time. Compared to female sterilization, male sterilization is simpler, more effective, and has fewer complications. Sterilization can also be reversed.

Operation

Sterilization (vasectomy) is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes between 20 and 30 minutes. You remain awake throughout the procedure without feeling any pain.

It is possible to be anesthetized and sleep throughout the entire operation, but this is quite rare.

The surgeon makes a small incision in the scrotum, locates the vas deferens, which is then removed and divided. A piece of the duct is removed and the ends are sutured tightly to prevent them from growing together.

The same procedure is repeated on the other vas deferens. If there has been no previous surgery on the scrotum, the operation is usually simple and takes about half an hour. The tissue samples are sent to the laboratory for examination to confirm that the vas deferens has been divided.

How to prepare for sterilization

Shave the scrotum the day before the operation. This is to prevent hair from getting into the surgical wounds, which can lead to infection. Before the procedure, you must inform us if you are taking blood-thinning medication. You must sign a self-declaration form. You can drive both before and after the operation.

Please take the following into consideration after the procedure

The day after the sterilization, you should shower with the bandage that was applied after the procedure. After showering, replace the wet bandage with a new one that we will provide. The edges of the wound should be clean. If you notice pus or anything that looks abnormal, please contact us. Swelling and discoloration are normal and will go away on their own. The stitches will dissolve and fall out after about 2-3 weeks. For the first 3-4 weeks, you must be careful with heavy lifting. In a few cases, the stitches may remain in place for up to 4 weeks.

Ejaculation and orgasm will occur in exactly the same way after sterilization, but the ejaculate will look somewhat clearer as it no longer contains sperm cells.

Sperm cells may remain in the vas deferens, so it is important to have a semen analysis after 3 months before stopping other contraceptives. You will receive a referral for this, which explains where and how this sample should be delivered. It is not unusual for this test to have to be done several times at monthly intervals because there are still traces of sperm cells in the vas deferens.
