Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are protrusions of blood vessels in the rectum. Common symptoms include bleeding, pain, and visible protrusions in the rectal opening. At Kalbakkenklinikken, we can help you with the diagnosis and treatment of both simple and more complex rectal problems.

Hemorrhoids are very common and affect approximately 33% of the population. They are not dangerous, but can be uncomfortable and painful. Some people experience discomfort that goes away on its own, while for others it is a recurring problem that varies greatly in terms of pain level.

Recommended treatment also varies. Most patients are treated with suppositories and ointment, and for some this is sufficient. For others, a surgical approach is necessary, with elastic band ligation or surgery.

Different degrees of hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can be internal hemorrhoids with or without varying degrees of prolapse (grade 1-4), external hemorrhoids, and mixed conditions. We use various treatment methods and select the method that is best suited to the individual patient.

  1. In grade 1 hemorrhoids, the hemorrhoid is not visible outside the rectum, but can be detected by endoscopy. Common with fresh, red blood and itching.
  2. With grade 2 hemorrhoids, the hemorrhoid protrudes toward the rectal opening when you strain, but slides back on its own if you squeeze a little.
  3. In grade 3 hemorrhoids, the hemorrhoid is visible outside the rectum but must be pushed back in with a finger.
  4. In grade 4 hemorrhoids, the swelling has become so severe that the hemorrhoid cannot be pushed back into place.

Hemorrhoids are the most common cause of bleeding during bowel movements, but this should always be examined to determine whether it is a hemorrhoid or something else. It is important that the doctor examines the intestine, both with a finger and endoscopy.
