Removal of sebaceous gland (atheroma)

Sebaceous cysts (atheromas) are the most common type of skin cyst. They can occur anywhere on the skin. Common atheromas appear as a swelling just under the skin with a small opening on the skin surface. Normally, they can be moved under the skin. Their size varies from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter.

Sebaceous cysts are common in women. They most often occur in patients aged 20-50. Older patients with prolonged sun exposure tend to develop sebaceous cysts. The development of sebaceous cysts increases in those who have struggled with acne.

Treatment of sebaceous cysts (atheromas)

Infections often occur in such cysts. They are filled with wax-like contents. If infected, they must be drained by minor surgery.

If there are grounds for removing the cyst, an attempt should be made to remove the entire cyst. This can be difficult if there is or has been inflammation in the area.
