Hernia

A hernia is a protrusion of the peritoneum through a weak spot or opening in the abdominal wall. Hernias appear as a lump when you stand upright, cough, or push out your abdomen.

In children, hernias always require surgery. In adults, hernias that do not cause symptoms or pain do not need to be operated on. However, if you are physically active or exercise a lot, hernias will usually cause symptoms and discomfort in the long term. In such cases, there is an indication for surgical treatment of the hernia.

Treatment today is surgical and in most cases involves reinforcing the abdominal wall with a type of special mesh. In some cases where we do not want to perform surgery, a hernia truss can be a permanent treatment.

There are several types of hernias:

  • Inguinal hernia – in the groin
  • Umbilical hernia – in or around the navel
  • Incisional hernia – hernia in an old scar
  • Thigh hernia – in the transition to the thigh
  • Epigastric hernia – the midline between the navel and the diaphragm
