Anal fissure

An anal fissure is a tear in the skin around the anus, which can make bowel movements very painful. The condition often improves spontaneously after six weeks, but in some people it is recurrent/chronic and requires treatment.

Short waiting times. No referral required.

What is an anal fissure?

Anal fissures can be caused by hard stools or constipation or anal intercourse, but often no obvious cause for the condition can be found. To make a diagnosis, the doctor will examine the infected area and look for the typical symptoms.

For many, dietary changes and local treatment with creams or ointments will be sufficient, while others may benefit from injection treatments such as Botox. If the situation does not improve, surgical treatment may be considered.
