TUR-B

When bladder cancer is diagnosed, most patients undergo a procedure called TUR-B, which stands for transurethral resection of the bladder. The operation is performed using a scope inserted through the urethra, and the tumor is "peeled" away. The tissue is removed through the urethra and sent for analysis to determine whether it is a superficial or deeper tumor. If it is a superficial tumor, treatment is usually complete after this operation, while deeper tumors may require more extensive surgery and possible additional treatment.

Bladder cancer is a common form of cancer, especially among men. Visible blood in the urine is the most common and often the only sign of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is one or more tumors that grow from the inner surface of the bladder.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Mild pain or burning sensation when urinating
  • Pressure or mild pain

If bladder cancer is suspected, your doctor will refer you to a urologist, who will use a number of examination methods to make the correct diagnosis, including:

  • Cystoscopy
  • Urine cytology
  • CT urography
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
