Prostate check
A prostate examination consists of a PSA blood test and an ultrasound scan of the prostate. It is also necessary to examine the prostate through the rectum. This examination is also known as a digital rectal examination (DRE). The urologist will check for the following:
- Knotty prostate gland
- Asymmetry
- Irregularities in the prostate gland
It is possible to have prostate examinations carried out by your regular doctor. However, more and more men are choosing to visit a private urologist directly to have their prostate checked and ask questions about prostate cancer. If an annual prostate check indicates prostate cancer, an enlarged prostate or inflammation, further examinations are necessary.
