Refertilization of men
Sterilization is a simple and common method of contraception for men. The method involves cutting the vas deferens, which transports sperm from the testicles to the seminal vesicle.
If you regret the sterilization, the vas deferens can be sutured back together. This is called refertilization.
Result
There are several factors that can determine whether a reversal is successful or not. Important factors include age and how long ago you were sterilized.
In general, it can be said that 70–80% of patients can expect to have sperm in their ejaculate after the procedure. The likelihood of pregnancy will also be affected by your partner's circumstances.
Before, during, and after surgery
Reversal of sterilization is performed under light anesthesia and you can go home the same day. You may experience some pain and may need pain medication. To reduce bleeding and pain, you should avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few days after the procedure.
You may experience some swelling and bruising of the skin around the area where the skin has been opened.
Sexual activity can be resumed after approximately 3 weeks.
If you have physically demanding work, you should talk to your surgeon about whether you need to take sick leave.
A check-up will be arranged with the surgeon after the operation.
Sperm check after refertilization
A semen sample test 2–3 months after the procedure will reveal whether the refertilization was successful. This analysis reveals the quality and vitality of the semen and any other conditions that may affect semen quality.
